Winter
2003
The medieval town of Chinchon (where many of our
Members have visited with us) had never quite seen anything like it!
On Saturday, 22 November, some fifty Members of
the Wellington Society converged on the picturesque town, meeting up in
the delightful plaza for wine and cheese...to start the day's celebrations
off. They came from England, Ireland, many parts of Spain and the United
States and even some from Scotland. The latter caused quite a stir amongst
the many locals who had stopped to stare at these beefy Scots who strutted
around in full Scottish regalia; tartan kilts, black & white speckled
sporons, dark green military jackets and very noticeable white & red
checkered knee length socks.
The event? Why the wedding of our Chairman &
Connie of course! The wedding (copying a Roman Pagan one of the 2nd
century AD) and feast was held in the awesome 500 year old Great Hall in
'Las Cuevas'. Flowers & jugs of wine adorned every wooden table with the
enormous log fire giving extra warmth (no pun intended!). Poems were read
in Spanish and then in English, including a very moving one written by
Connie, and after the exchanging of vows translated from the Latin and the
passing of coins and sharing of wine from a goblet, Stephen & Connie were
married in the eyes of their close family, friends and Society Members.
They then ordered forth the traditional Chinchon meal of spicy sausages,
cured hams, fresh salads and sizzling casseroles of roast lamb.
To those fortunate to attend and to those who
could not but sent such kind letters & cards, Connie & Stephen thank
you all.
