Hemingway's Madrid

Ernest Hemingway was no stranger to the Spanish capital and its many bars and restaurants! On our Hemingway tour we call in at the thirties style taverns which were the great writer's local drinking and eating haunts which still have photos of him adorning the walls. Places can be reserved at the famous Botins restaurant which was a great favourite of Hemingway and which he mentions in his book Death in the Afternoon

"In Madrid on cold nights you can drink sherry brandy and go to bed. To go to bed at night in Madrid marks you as a little queer. For a long time your friends will be a little uncomfortable about it. Nobody goes to bed in Madrid until they have killed the night. Appointments with a friend are habitually made for after midnight at the cafe. In no other town that I have ever lived in is there less going to bed for sleeping purposes".

Be sure to visit the web site of Brian Gordon Sinclair, Hemingway expert and a great friend of the Wellington Society of Madrid.
