George Borrow in Madrid

George Henry Borrow crossed over the border into Spain from Portugal in January 1836 arriving in Madrid the following month. Until his departure from the Spanish capital on 3rd January, 1840, Borrow was with smugglers, horse thieves, gypsies, and politicians; crossed swords with the primate of all Spain; was the most wanted man in Madrid, thrown into the notorious city prison, and had his lodgings and shop raided by the authorities; got involved in the civil war; travelled extensively throughout the country; and fell in love. Hard to believe he was an agent for the British and Foreign Bible Society! Besides speaking a dozen foreign languages he actually translated Saint Luke's gospel into the gypsy tongue.

We follow in the footsteps of this remarkable man through old Madrid on a two hour guided tour, with stops in his local taverns.                                     Click here for price
